ARTS DAY IN ALBANY: MARCH 18

A PRE-ARTS DAY EVENT: MARCH 17

NATIONAL ARTS DAY IN WASHINGTON, DC:

MARCH 25, 26, 2003

FROM THE UPSTATE OFFICE

NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS

DEADLINE INFORMATION

RESULTS FROM ANNUAL FINANCIAL SURVEY SUMMARY AVAILABLE

ARTS DAY IN ALBANY: MARCH 18
THE ARTS DAY MESSAGE:

Restore the $6.6 million cut to the NYSCA budget. Maintain level funding".

Join your colleagues in Albany on TUESDAY, MARCH 18. The Arts Day Hearing with the Senate and Assembly will be held at 11 am in Hearing Room C, LOB. This year we plan to have representatives from around New York State telling stories of the profound and critical impact of the arts in every community in the State. The REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL DEADLINE has been extended, by request, to MARCH 6 because of the NYSCA deadline. We seek compelling 5 minute presentations to put a face on the vibrant cultural industry in New York State by demonstrating strong, unique and diverse programs. Presentations should exemplify the positive impact of government investment in the arts, and conversely, what could happen if support is reduced. Proposals may be submitted by email to PKBARTS@aol.com or fax: 631-298-1101.

Arts Day is a grass roots groundswell of constituents endorsing public funding for the arts in NYS. Join us as we meet with legislators to show support for the New York State Arts Council budget. The story is in the numbers and we hope to have an unprecedented response from the arts community all over New York State. Governor Pataki's Executive Budget Bill for 2003-2004 cuts the NYSCA "Aid to Localities" (grant money) $6.6 million dollars from $44,000,000 to $37,400,000. The show of support is critical to keeping the arts alive in New York State. This is just the beginning of a legislative budget process where you can make a difference. In this most difficult economy, when the State faces a $2 billion shortfall on the current 2002-03 budget and a $10 billion shortfall on the 2003-04 budget, your voice is more important than ever in Albany.

In addition to meeting with your legislators in your home district, it is important to come to Albany with your constituents to put a face on the arts. Come visit with your elected officials. Bring Board members, artists and community leaders and any items that can illustrate the impact you have on your community. Visits should take place between 9 and 3. To sign up online for Arts Day in Albany, click here.

Please note there will be a Folk Arts Breakfast in Room 211B, LOB, 8:30 am - 10 am. Meet with legislators and with members of the statewide folk arts network. This event is coordinated by the New York Folklore Society.

Despite stringent security regulations and many complications we have reserved parking spaces for Arts Day in the outdoor Cathedral Parking lot, and there are just a few left. In order to secure a space please send a check for $7.00 per space along with the name, organization, address, and phone number for each space to the Alliance, PO Box 96, Mattituck, NY 11952 by MARCH 11. If you have any questions, please contact Amy Wippert at 631-298-1234 awippert@worldnet.att.net.

The Alliance of New York State Arts Organizations sponsors and administers Arts Day. The Alliance will provide talking points to support your position. Bring as many of your constituents as you can to on Albany March 18.
